Cracked heels
Cracked Heel Treatment in The Woodlands | Conroe | Spring | North Houston
What are cracked heels?
Cracked heels can result from cracks and fissures in the skin caused by:
Dry skin: Rough, flaky skin on the heels can develop deep fissures, leading to cracked heels. This is typically due to skin dehydration, which makes it less flexible and prone to cracking (American Academy of Dermatology, AAD).
Excess moisture: This can soften the skin and make it more vulnerable to infection. Moist conditions, especially in shoes that don't allow the feet to breathe, can encourage fungal or bacterial growth, leading to cracks between the toes or around the heels (Mayo Clinic).
Risk factors for dry skin: Frequent barefoot walking, wearing open shoes, or excessive exposure to dry environments can cause the skin to crack. Dry weather, lack of moisture, or cold environments can further exacerbate this (American Academy of Dermatology, AAD).
Risk factors for moist skin: Wearing shoes without socks, or shoes that don't allow proper ventilation, trap moisture, creating an environment conducive to fungal or bacterial infections (Mayo Clinic)
Both dry and moist conditions can contribute to cracked heels, leading to discomfort, pain, and potentially more serious infections if left untreated. For more information on cracked heels visit our Cracked Heels Do’s and Don’ts blog.
